| Stardust memories has been a fixture on Sunday Mornings at Manao Radio since the beginning more than 4 years ago. Playing a mix of 40's and 50's music, Host Scott Sherley takes pride in bringing some of this great music to the listeners all over Maui and the world thanks to on line streaming. Stardust memories has been around for nearly 15 years in one form or another. In the 90's it was known as "Sentimental Journey" and heard every Saturday Night from 7pm to Midnight, with Host/Creator Scott Sherley and creator moved to KPMW on Sunday Nights. For a few years it was off the air, and then returned under a new name "Stardust Memories" thanks to the efforts of Barry Shannon and Kathy Collins who formed Manao Radio and asked Scott to join them with his show and become a Board Member of the new Non-Profit Radio Station. Over the years Stardust Memories has become one of the highest rated programs on the air in Maui and continues to this day, while adding some of the favorite of the 60's to the line up of music. If you don't live on Maui, you can still Listen On-Line. And since Manao is a non-profit community radio station, and all the On Air Talent volunteer their time, we look to the community and the listeners for support. |

| Realtors on the Radio Joseph W. Bean Mana‘o Radio depends on listeners’ dollars for its survival, but there’d be nothing but dead air if not for volunteer DJs. All the DJs who keep Mana‘o Radio on the air are volunteers. Each is doing for love what commercial radio personalities do for a living. So, what happens if a volunteer has to take a sick day, finds herself called off-island for business, or needs an afternoon with his kids? That’s an emergency. Don’t panic and don’t “break glass,” just call a Realtor. No kidding. Sue Peterson Mana‘o Radio’s founders, Barry Shannon and Kathy “Tita” Collins, have a full line-up of DJs. When one of them can’t be in the Wailuku studio to fill his or her hours, they call a back-up. Sue Peterson, a Realtor with Keller Williams, said, “It’s pretty easy for me. Being a Realtor, it works out. I can move my schedule around.” She was never a regular DJ at Mana‘o, always a fill-in. “I started with Mike Elf about a year and a half ago. That was the Mike & Mark Show, but no, I didn’t try to be Mark. Whatever was going on in the world, we’d do that. If a road was closed, we’d do a lot of road songs.” On an evening in May, Peterson was filling in for Collins in her “Tita Out” time slot. And, no, she was certainly not trying to be Tita. She was, however, playing mostly Hawaiian music, just as Collins would have done if she were there, “with some other more mellow music too.” “Sometimes I do a week; sometimes it’s a couple of hours. The times that I fill are usually when someone is on vacation,” Peterson said. Reminded that the Maui Weekly once celebrated a non-emergency Mana‘o DJ/realtor, Scott Sherley, who has since moved to the Big Island, Peterson said, “He still does his Sunday show. He flies in every week to do it.” That’s really not so surprising to Peterson. “Every single DJ here is a volunteer,” she said, “and every single one that I’ve talked to says that doing this has changed their lives. Doing this is a very good way to share your mana‘o (thinking, wisdom).” Scott Sherley When Joni Mitchell sang “we are stardust, we are golden” on her Woodstock album in 1969, she was nearly 20 years too late to capture the interest of Mana‘o Radio DJ Scott Sherley. His interests are more in line with Natalie Cole’s 1996 album, Stardust. How can 10-year-old recordings be old enough while those done 37 years ago are too new? It’s the content. Sherley’s Mana‘o Radio show, Stardust Memories, features—even celebrates—the music of the 1940s and 1950s, maybe letting in a little of the “easy listening” music of the early 1960s. Like all Mana‘o DJs, Sherley is a volunteer. His day job is real-estate-broker-in-charge with ERA Maui Real Estate. Every Sunday, however, if he’s on Maui, you’ll find him in the studio broadcasting “his music” from 10 a.m. to 2 p. m. What’s more, in addition to putting in his volunteer hours on the air at Mana‘o, Sherley also says “yes” whenever he’s asked to take the show on the road to Kaunoa senior residences. “I’ve seen guys come shuffling in, barely able to walk. They sit down and then the music starts. Next thing you know, they’re dancing and they stay out there on the floor dancing till the music stops.” Sherley said, “I’ve been doing radio in one form or another since I got licensed.” You’d be excused if you thought he was referring to some kind of DJ license, but he was talking about his 1985 real estate license. “I actually got into radio by accident,” Sherley said. He was supposed to sell radio advertising, and he hated that; but he got interested in the other side of radio, and he’s happy there. “And I just love this stuff,” he said, waving a hand over his CDs arrayed below the player decks. Doing on-the-air radio is a way to share that love. He’s done DJ gigs with KNUI, KNVI, KPMW and others, including a Filipino radio station for a while. The KMVI show was especially easy because Sherley’s real estate office was just upstairs from the station. Still, he really likes what he’s doing with Mana‘o commercial-free, listener-supported radio right now. “We do it for free,” he said. “About 99.99 percent of the time, I won’t let them pay me,” Sherley said of the live shows he does. Whatever any of it costs to do, he feels fully repaid by sharing the magic of his special music. Do your part In the fashion of any truly dedicated volunteer, Peterson wanted to be sure everyone would know how to make a contribution of financial support for Mana‘o Radio. So, here’s that information: Donations can be mailed to Mana‘o Radio, P. O. Box 1145, Wailuku, HI 96793. Alternatively, if you go to the Web site, www.manaoradio.com, you’ll see a “donate” icon near the top of every page. A recent Mana‘o Reunion at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center featured Barry Flanagan, one of the very earliest and most ardent Mana‘o supporters. Peterson doesn’t think of her volunteering at Mana‘o as “all that much.” Shannon does. “She never says ‘no,’ never,” he said. Sherley now lives on the Big Island and flies in to do his weekend show. That’s dedication worthy of support. From: Maui Weekly 8/24/2006 |
